This allows them to host events during the colder seasons. The curtains roll up during the warm season with a pulley and rope system. Made with heavy duty vinyl, these curtains solve the problem of open Pavilions needing to be closed in.

Tent Cleaning - Removing Tough Stains

Part of Herculite's ongoing product enhancement and innovation focuses on Tent Fabric maintenance and cleanability so we offer guidelines for cleaning and maintaining your tents.

Regularly cleanings will wash away the dirt and grime but sometimes you will encounter some stubborn stains that will not come out with general cleaning. Let's look at some possible suggestions for removing tough stains.

Caution: All of these suggestions are more aggressive than general cleaning and you should use caution when applying to tent fabrics. Always test a small area on the fabric surface before applying to general stain area.

Rust or mineral stains:

CLR (Calcium, Lime Rust remover) is an acid that dissolves mineral deposits that are left on the surface of the fabric.
If your clear sidewall windows have a hard water residue or look foggy, a weak dilution of these acids can remove the deposits as well.

Mildew stains:

Mildew stains are very difficult to remove and require a chorine cleaner of some type. You must be careful to not over clean them with any type of bleach because it will rob the plasticizers from the tent fabric and make it stiff.
Blitz Mildew remover or X-14 are good choices for using on mildew stains. These solutions are calcium hypochlorite and do a better job of "killing" the roots or spores of the mildew.

Tar, paint, duct tape or grease stains:

These types of stains can be removed with a pure organic citrus solvent.

Crepe paper or confetti stains:

These leave dyes that bleed deep into the vinyl and seem impossible to remove.
Tent rental companies in sunny states like Arizona and Nevada have found that the ultraviolet light from the sun can actually bleach out these dye stains.
Others have tried using infrared heating lamps like used at meat carving stations: Just set the lamp at normal distance from the surface and let it sit around 20 minutes.This has also been tried successfully on old set-in mildew stains and leaf stains, but this is a new idea and you must be careful to not let the vinyl get overheated.

However, he needed something that would be free standing in the parking lots where he sold his goods. Armbruster custom built a heavy duty internal frame to match the Large Wall Tent dimensions, and modified a large wall tent to fasten to the frame. Now the customer has the look of a Large Wall Tent, but the versatility of a free standing frame tent.

Fabric Enclosure for Space Capsule Supplier

Armbruster was contracted to design and fabricate an large custom enclosure to solve a critical problem for ATK Mission Systems, a supplier of space capsules.

Problem: Particles and dust from a routing machine which cuts the through hulls for space capsule modules was getting outside the containment box and potentially contaminating the rest of the facility.

Solution: Encapsulate the entire box with a frame and fabric enclosure to contain the dust.

Challenges: Frame and cover needed to be 32ft wide x 50ft tall x 96ft long. Cover also had to be removable quickly and separate in the middle. This would allow for inserting large capsules through the top of the box if needed as well as the end.

End product was a enclosure that Armbruster worked closely with on site engineers to design that best fit their needs. Armbruster used premium Ferrari coated fabrics for the cover that suspended on rolling tracks. The cover suspended under a custom frame on these track systems that allowed the cover to be opened and closed easily.

A truly custom project built on a tight production schedule to fit the customers space capsule delivery time tables.

Recently Armbruster was awarded the contract to build a one of a kind Circus Tent for the Midnight Circus who performs in Chicago, Illinois. Armbruster worked close at hand with the Midnight Circus designing an elegant, long lasting, unique Circus Tent for their acts. The Chicago Park District then ordered their tent to be used for year round shows in parks around the City.

Armbruster has an interesting History with Circus tents, since that's how Armbruster got into the tent making business. We started in 1875 manufacturing Wagon covers, tarpalins, canvas pillows, and awnings. Around 1890 a circus came to Springfield, IL and needed a new circus tent made. Armbruster then built them a Circus tent which entered us into the tent making business. Armbruster has a long history of making beautiful long lasting tents, and many Circus tents for various Circus companies throughout the years. Now 121 years later we are still making Circus tents on request.

Engineered with the finest European fabrics, stainless steel hardware, structural grade aluminum poles, and tensioning hardware, this is a true tension Circus tent. Tent Cleaning Tips

Cleaning Guidelines:

Always clean tent fabrics on a non-abrasive surface. If you have to clean on pavement or concrete, cover with a drop cloth and then layout your tent fabric. Take care to avoid rocks and all sharp objects that may damage the fabric.
For general cleaning, use mild liquid soap or detergent. Always start with the mildest and work up in strength as needed.
Do not use solvents or any abrasive cleaners.
Use soft bristle brushes, not rough scrubbing pads.
Always rinse the fabric with clear water thoroughly after cleaning. Do not allow any soap residue to dry on the fabric.
Always make sure the tent fabric is completely dry before storing.

Cleaning Equipment:

Sponge, mop or brush cleaning - most recommended by fabric manufacturers and least aggressive on the fabric surface.
Buffer or floor polisher - be very careful with this method especially around the edges, scallops and rope rigging. Machine cleaning mistakes can quickly tear the tent fabric.
Pressure washer - use at low pressures to lower risk of damaging the fabric. Maintain a distance of 24 inches from the fabric surface.

Here is an example of a 50ft x 50ft Armbruster EuroTent installed at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Embassy was looking for a extremely weather resistant tent that can be easily installed on preset footings inside the courtyard for special events.

The Solution: The Armbruster 50x50 EuroTent is the premier tension tent of it's kind. Single pole design with coated 22oz vinyl, stainless steel hardware, and no exposed stitching or webbing in the design. This leads to a stronger, longer lasting, weather resistant tent which won't rust or stain over time like tents with exposed webbing and non stainless steel hardware.

The customer installed preset anchors inside the courtyard so the tent can be installed for special events and when removed the anchors are subset and covered in the courtyard. Base Paint Tents for Haiti Classrooms

Armbruster was chosen as the tent supplier for the Base Paint project for Haiti. The tragic earthquake that hit Haiti left more than 3000 schools destroyed or damaged. Fundacion Manos Del Sur and Step by Step Foundation has created an art project that supports the creation of classrooms for the children in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. A project that elevates the spirits of a country's population-already plagued by insufficiency--struck by one of the worst natural disasters in history.

(10) tents custom made by Armbruster Company, America's oldest Tentmaker established in 1875, were used as the canvas for this project. The tents were painted in Miami Event Space located in the Little Haiti in Miami.

The tents will be set up as an art installation in Miami where the public can view them. An auction will be held with art donated by international artists. The funds raised will finance school equipment and supplies and the construction of additional structures.

Custom Outfitter Tent for Store Display

Recently Armbruster had a customer contact us with a specific request. He wanted a turn of the century Outfitter style tent designed to fit within a lodge. He owns a lodge in Montana and sells fly fishing equipment. The tent was going to be used as an interior store display set up with cots, stove, and fishing rods. Armbruster provided a solution that exactly fit the display room dimensions and gave the perfect Outfitter style look he was trying to achieve. The tent hand built measured approximately 8ft x 10ft. Include were roll up sidewalls, overhanging edge, and stove pipe opening. Armbruster even used period looking antique poles to finish the final look. This tent was made in the exact same style that Armbruster made for customers heading west around the turn of the century. The customer is installing screw eyes into his wooden floor to hold the tent secure. All materials used (thread, grommets, slides, rope, canvas) were all period authentic.

Armbruster Tentmaker displayed World War II Canvas tents during the Rockford World War II Event September 23-26 in Midway Village, Rockford, Illinois. The 10th Mountain Division, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment (Reenacted) displayed the latest models of World War II specification tents in their camp. Tents displayed this year were the 1942 Command Tent, Wall Tent, Small and Wall Tent, Large as well as a Small Fly. The tents weathered a large storm the first night and didn't leak a bit.

The 1942 Command Tent was a huge hit. Spacious interior with room enough for two cots, two desks and trunks. Windows rolled up for ventilation.

Armbruster is now offering the 1942 WWII Command Post Tent (or commonly known as the "2HQ" tent during the war) under its line of WWII period tents. This tent is manufactured as the Tent, Fire-Resistant, Command Post, M-1942, Olive Drab, Stock No. 24-T-318-33.

Introduced in 1942, this tent was used in Theater of Operations to provide office shelter for Staff Sections of the several Command Echelons. The Command Post Tent is constructed in such a way that it may be completely blacked out, it may thus be safely used in a combat area without fear of observation. When necessary, this tent may be used for quartering of TWO Officers. This tent is 7ft wide, 11ft 10.5 inches long, and 7ft high. Floor space is 84 feet. Tent is made from 12.29 oz authentic cotton duck with metal slides. Square windows are made of flexible glass material, with covering flaps. Tent includes ventilation vents, and message drop openings. There is no provision for stove pipe openings as per the original design.

Armbruster WWII Shelter Halves

During WWII Armbruster Manufacturing Company made tens of thousands of WWII canvas shelter halves to support the war effort. Many of these are still in existence today and can be found on ebay for around $100 each. We have a few remaining original 1942 dated shelter halves which show the OD#3 colored canvas used during the war. The War Department at the time shipped the canvas, grommets, thread, and rope to tent suppliers like ourselves and we manufactured the tents to specifications provided. Government inspectors would often visit and walk through our plants to inspect outgoing shipments to the Quartermaster Depots. Recently the Tri-State Living History Association was generous enough to loan two original WWII canvas 1934 Pyramidal Tents for Armbruster to reference. Armbruster is now building these tents again just like we did during the 1940s. Eric "Tab" Taubery, the President of the Tri-State Living History Association contacted us to donate the use of his organization's two tents to referene in the construction of our "new" made versions.

We are now comparing these tents against our original construction files to ensure our versions we manufacture now match the originals. The shape of these two original tents is amazing. Both built in 1940, these tents are 70 years old and still going! One is an early war USMC khaki version, and the other is a mid war Army contract version. Slight variations in each, but all in all both contracts were the same for both services during the war. The tent back on the USMC tent is dated 1931!

Much thanks goes to Eric "Tab" Taubery and his organizations efforts to keep the WWII history alive and authentic. His efforts ensures are files are now exact to the construction of these tents during such a key period of American History.

Armbruster just recently completed prototypes of 1941 specification wall tents, using original wartime information and details. We built these using machines and equipment from the era. Cotton thread, webbing, bronze slides, and stencil plates actually from WWII were used in their construction. New 14 oz waterproof, flame retardant canvas was used, with period correct brass grommets and rope. Armbruster plans to sell these tents to reenactors, museums, private collectors, and movie production sets. Details of the tents:

Tent, Fire-Resistant, Wall, Large, Olive-Drab, Stock No. 24-T-322 - This is the large version of the above tent used as an Officer's Mess, Office, storage of supplies, or quartering of personnel. It sleeps 8 men withoug a stove, or 6 with a stove installed. Dimensions are 14ft 6inches wide x 15ft 2 1/4 Inches long and 11ft high. Same material as the small wall tent. Tent, Fire-Resistant, M1934 Pyramidal, Olive-Drab, Stock No. 24-T-322 - This version is the most commonly seen tent in tent cities during the war both stateside and in Europe. 16ft wide x 16ft long x 11ft High. Eight man tent introduced in 1934. Ventilation through hood at the top. Rope, and metal slides, brass grommets. Sides roll up easily.

Tent, Post Command M 1942, Stock No. 24-T-318-33 - Introduced in 1942, this tent was used in Theaters of Operations to provide Office Shelter for Staff Sections of several Command echelons. The Command Post Tent is constructed in such a way that it may be completely blacked out, it may thus be safely used in a combat area without fear of observation. This tent is 7ft wide, 11feet 10.5 inches long, and 7 feet high. Floor space is 84 square feet. This is extension cloth at the rear end wall which makes it possible to combine 2 Command posts Tents when a larger office space is desired.

Delivery for these tents is 6-8 Weeks if not in stock. Each is hand sewn with period machines, every detail is matched of the originals. In addition, key points are reinforced so they last longer than the original ones did.

Armbruster Manufacturing has been building tents in American since 1875. This is our original plant based in Springfield, IL. We manufactured tents here from our beginnings until the plant was moved south of Springfield in the late 1970s. This original plant manufactured canvas goods, pillow cases, tarps, awnings, automobile covers, bags, canvas camping tents, water buckets, horse feed bags, circus tents, and early event tents for fairs and festivals. These and just about any items made from Canvas were produced in this plant. During World War I the plant manufactured Red Cross tents and early military pyramidals. During World War II the plant was ramped up with many other facilities (over 900 employees in 3 shifts) to make Canvas Military tents for World War II. After the war, production remained in the plant until Armbruster modernized and built it's new building where it remains today under one roof. Custom sides with doors were fabricated and interior lighting and fan brackets were installed. Heating and air conditioning was installed and brought in through ducts in the sidewalls. Even though this year businesses have suffered tremendous hard times, Armbruster worked hard on improving products and designs. We have learned from the Japanese firms that in hard times, invest in Research and Development so when the economy rolls back you have better and newer products to offer. This year Armbruster has done just that. Things we have done during the 2009 Recession:

1) We took a hard look at our Celebration frame tent series, and recognized our fittings needed to be improved. With valued feedback from our Customers we went back to the drawing board on our Celebration fittings and hired an engineering firm to redesign the steel Celebration fittings to be stronger, easier to assemble, consistent quality, easier to weld, and stronger gauge steel. The result was an entire fitting re-design and testing for 2009. New fittings were expedited and brought into production in September of 2009. They are now available for all new Celebration aluminum frame systems.

2) Armbruster designed and manufactured the 20ft EuroTents series in 2009. Until then we offered the PoleTent and EconoTent in 20ft pole supported tents, now the EuroTent is also built in 20ft series.

3) Armbruster designed and manufactured the 30ft EuroTent series in 2009. Until then we offered the PoleTent and TensionTent series in pole supported tents. We now offer the 30ft EuroTent which is perfect for weddings and special events.

4) With the growing interest in World War II events world wide, Armbruster was being contacted to building WWII Canvas tents. We dug through our files, and brushed the dust off boxes of material left from the war. We found original drawings and details of the Canvas tents we built during the war for numerous government contracts. After building and testing prototypes Armbruster now is selling WWII tents in the standard sizes: Wall Tent Small, Wall Tent Large, and 1934 Pyramidals, and now 1942 Command Post Tents. These tents are built even better than the originals using the same machinery and equipment we used to build tens of thousands of these tents during the war.

September of 2009, Armbruster displayed World War II wall tents at Rockford WWII Days. The 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne re-enactment unit from Springfield, IL displayed the Wall Tent Small and Wall Tent Large in their encampment at Midway Village, Rockford, IL. Tents were a big hit with the crowds and other re-enacment units. Wall Tent Small was used as an officer's tent, while a small squad utilized the Wall Tent Large.

Armbruster Tentmaker is now reproducing these tents with the same sewing machines and equipment that the company used to produce the original tents during World War II. Tens of thousands of these tents were made to house the Great Generation as they freed the world from tyranny during the greatest Military conflict of the 20th Century. Armbruster Upgrades Celebration Fittings

Always continuing to improve our products, we re-engineered and upgraded our Celebration fittings for 2009. We had two goals in mind. One was to make a stronger fitting with tighter tolerances, the second was to make a fitting that was easier and faster to manufacture. After working with an engineering firm the result was a stronger, more robust fitting, that was easier for a welder to assemble.

Final testing and evaulation is scheduled to be complete by mid summer 2009. All engineered Celebration aluminum systems will have these new fittings late summer/fall 2009. These fittings are compatible with all older Celebration systems. Our goal is to make a longer lasting stronger frame, and keep the cost competitive for our customers. We think you will be pleased.

August Update - Final testing complete, fittings are going to production. Heavier, stronger, better built - a true quality fitting which will make the Celebrations last even longer, and take much higher wind loads!

Armbruster Weathers the Recession

Being a family owned business since 1875, Armbruster has learned business principles the old fashioned way - through trial and error. These lessons have been passed down through four generations of Armbrusters and have become our business model. This model has helped us weather many a recession and keep our customers faithful to our product. Prior to 9/11 the economy was going into a dip, and after the attack many hard decisions were made by Bernard Armbruster to refocus the company back to the same principals that made Armbruster survive the great depression which his father Walter Armbruster experienced. Walter learned his skills from his father Rudolf Armbruster, who started the company and established the core principles in 1875. These principles remain if effect and ensure the company was not greatly affected by the current recession. Carlos Ghosn used these same principles to turn Nissan around years before this current recession. You don't hear trouble from that company either. We have modified his plan for Nissan to fit what we were already doing at Armbruster:

1) No customer, relationship, product, or person is sacred.

2) No sweetheart discounts to "old customers".

3) Make fewer, better products.

4) Listen to suggestions from all, incorporate fresh ideas.

5) Make final decisions only after the decision making process is used.

6) We are nothing without profit. There is profit in each and every product we sell.

7) Cut the fat, keep the muscle.

8) Change in a company takes at least 2 years. Accept it and plan for it.

9) We are not in the business to build tents just to keep people busy, build what sells.

Whether running a tent rental business, or any business in general, if you focus on these key ideas you business will run fine. It's amazing how these principles were not used with the US Car Companies who now are so much in trouble.

I thank my forefathers, and especially my Father, Bernard Armbruster, for giving me the insight to manage a great company with great workers. The success of our company hinges on the wonderful staff of employees who have dedicated their lives to making great tents.

Armbruster Builds first Tension Structure in 1972

During the Milwaukee Summer Fest in 1972, located in Milwaukee, WI, Armbruster Mfg. Co. was contracted to build and install a unique tension style stage cover for the entertainers. These included Johnny Cash and George Carlin. This was also the same event George Carlin was arrested for his 7 dirty words you can't say on television.

Bernard Armbruster, President of Armbruster Mfg. Co., installed the structure in 1972 over the stage. This experience helped lead us to later TensionTent designs we introduced in the 1980s and finally received patents for in 1990.

This structure was a unique design with no sidepoles. It was guyed off the center poles on stage. Made from early vinyl fabrics, and sewn at that time, it became a beautiful back drop for the Milwaukee Summer Fest. The origins of this design came from early German concept designs from the 1930s-1950s.

These tents are made to last, just like the originals we manufactured over 65 years ago. Some people ask why our Canvas WWII tents are more expensive that other vendors on the market. The reasons why are these are not tents made for a set to be used one time. We take care to meet the original war time contract specifications and almost 70 years later that doesn't come cheap. Our tents are better for the following reasons:

These WWII Tents are American Made not imported
These tents are manufactured by the same manufacturer who made them during the War.
We use the same machines, stencils, and hardware, some dating from 1928.
We reference our original drawings and files on hand from the War era.
We source flame retardant, waterproofed 12.29oz OD cotton duck material not cheap untreated 10 oz canvas. It took years to source this authentic wartime spec material.
We build our Canvas tents with reinforcements, double stitching, reinforced webbing, heavy duty hardware - so these tents last even longer than the originals.
We source authentic brass grommets, thread, cotton webbing, slides, and rope - some materials from our own stocks dated back to the 1940s. The slides, cotton tape and Cotton thread on our first run of tents was actually from the war era.
Lifespan of our WWII canvas tents is 30-40 years of regular use.
These are Milspec tents made to military specifications - not re-enactor grade tents that wear out after a few years. We don't make reproductions we make NEW MADE WARTIME CANVAS TENTS to U.S. Government Contract Specifications.
We have been making tents since 1875, with over 135 years of tent making experience. We stand behind our products and it shows.
These WWII Canvas tents are hand made by master craftsmen with over 40 years of tent manufacturing experience.
Because these tents are made by a TENTMAKER, the patterns are correct and the pull out properly to look like a tent! (and shed water properly). Other vendors tents don't pull out properly because the patterns are incorrect, or the sewing was done improperly.
These tents are under full warranty back by a company who has been hand making tents since 1875.

The White House Event with the EuroTent

Recently the Aaron Shock was visited by President George W. Bush in Peoria for a short notice fund raising event. Armbruster was contacted to provide a 80 x 240 foot EuroTent at the Weaver Farms in Peoria. Our staff worked closely with the White House staff and Secret Service to provide a top quality EuroTent that met the security needs of the President. We helped develop a smooth flow of traffic in and out of the tent, catering access, and the President's access through the front. The President was impressed by the huge "Circus Tent" that was provided for him at the Weaver Farms.

As greater engineering and design demands have been placed on tents, Armbruster responded with the fully engineered EuroTent®; a structure that shares many of the same details of the PoleTent® while incoroporating a modern design and aesthetic. The EuroTent® is available in widths of 40’, 50’, 60’, and 80’ and its modular design allows expandability to any length.

The Armbruster EuroTent® features standard 10’ side pole spacing, 23oz. structural grade fabrics, guy webs at no extra charge, and all stainless steel hardware. Tensioning is achieved through an unexposed 2” cantenary webbing system between side poles. The Loss of Great Employee

On July 4, 2008 Tony "David" Vieira passed away in a tragic parachuting accident. He was born March 3, 1954 in Springfield, the son of Tony and Mildred Wilkerson Vieira. He married Tina LaFalce on Aug. 14, 1999. He is survived by his wife Tina Marie Vieira of Glenarm; two sons, Tony David Vieira, both of Springfield; a grandson, A.J. Vieria; his mother, Mildred Vieira of Springfield; two sisters, Sue (husband, Charles) Reiser of Zion and Nancy (husband, Dennis) Rowe of Rochester; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dave worked for our company as the senior tent crew supervisor this last year. He came to us last summer and quickly jumped into our Tent Operations Division. He rose right to the top in less than a year. We felt like he had worked for us for more than a decade. He took over as lead trainer, warehouse manager, and senior tent crew supervisor. His loss to is a tragedy. We had such high hopes for him, and he was doing such outstanding work for our company. He was an employee who really cared and demonstrated to the younger crew what it meant to care and provide top customer service. He was our key after hours emergency response, and was always on call for our company. His list of accomplishments in organization and detail while he worked at Armbruster our too many to mention. He had just recently supervised one of our largest tent installations ever in Peoria, IL, an 80 x 260 EuroTent for the Easter Seals Gala Fundraising Event. We will miss such a key employee of our company. His shoes will be difficult to fill. Our condolences go out to his family.

EuroTent 80ft Wide x 260ft Long

Recently our Tent Rental Division of Armbruster installed a 80ft Wide x 260ft long EuroTent in 8 hours for the Easter Seals premier fund raising gala. Setting was at the beautiful Weaver Farms in Peoria, IL. This was one of the largest modern EuroTents Armbruster has installed since installing the large canvas tents we used to do for fairs and festivals back in the early 1980s. This tent was air conditioned for the event which included thousands of guests. The proper planning and organization of our Tent Rental Division ensured this tent was installed in record time, and by hand with 13 personnel.
